Case Story:

Discovery Guide
for Laumeier Sculpture Park

Laumeier Sculpture Park is one of the oldest and largest sculpture parks in the country — 105 acres where contemporary art and the natural environment exist in living conversation. When Laumeier needed a Discovery Guide worthy of that experience, they turned to Creativille to design a publication that felt as expressive and alive as the park itself.

The design challenge was singular: create a visitor guide that functioned as both a practical interpretive tool and an art object in its own right. Creativille met that challenge with a bold, immediately recognizable visual identity anchored by one defining creative decision — hand-drawn headline typography by Creativille's Steve Hartman. Rendered in vivid magenta and scaled to command full pages, the lettering carries the energy of the park's sculptures themselves: gestural, human, unapologetically present. No typeface could have achieved what the hand did here. The result feels authored, not assembled.

The typographic contrast throughout the publication is deliberate and precise — Hartman's expressive hand lettering set against clean, highly readable body text and elegant caption styling, including a secondary hand-script treatment for artwork callouts that brings a sense of intimacy to each image. Together, these choices create a layered reading experience that rewards both the casual visitor and the engaged art explorer.

Photography was art directed to honor both the sculptural works and their natural context — capturing the interplay of light, landscape, and form that defines Laumeier's unique character. Vivid color, generous white space, and considered pacing give the guide a gallery-quality feel while remaining completely accessible.

The Discovery Guide is not a brochure. It is an extension of the Laumeier experience — a piece of design that earns its place among the art.
